England will face Slovenia in Cologne on Tuesday, June 23, 2021, at 9pm local time, in their third and final Group C match. Both teams are looking to qualify for the round of 16.
England is coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw with Scotland, while Slovenia drew 1-1 with Serbia in their last match. England manager Gareth Southgate has come under fire for his team's performance, but he remains confident that they can qualify for the knockout stages.
"We know that we need to improve our performance, but we have the quality to do it," Southgate said. "We have a lot of young players who are hungry to prove themselves, and I believe in them."
Midfielder Declan Rice has also been criticized for his performance in the Scotland match, but he is confident that he can bounce back.
"I'm disappointed with my performance, but I'm not going to let it get me down," Rice said. "I'm going to work hard in training and I'm going to prove that I can be a valuable asset to this team."
England will be without defender Harry Maguire for the match against Slovenia. Maguire is suspended after receiving a red card in the Scotland match.
Slovenia will be through to the round of 16 at least as a best third-placed team if they avoid defeat against England. Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek is confident that his team can get a result.
"We know that England is a strong team, but we believe in ourselves," Kek said. "We have a good team spirit, and we are ready to fight for our place in the knockout stages."
