France is on course for a hung parliament in Sunday's election, with neither President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance nor the left-wing Nupes coalition projected to win an outright majority in the National Assembly.
With results from 577 constituencies counted, Macron's Ensemble alliance was on track to win between 265 and 300 seats, short of the 289 needed for a majority. Nupes, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, was projected to win between 150 and 190 seats, while the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen was projected to win between 70 and 100 seats.
The results will make it difficult for Macron to pass legislation and implement his agenda. He will need to form alliances with other parties or rely on the support of individual members of parliament to get his policies through the National Assembly.
