Russell escapes penalty over yellow flag incident
FIA issues statement on investigation
Lewis Hamilton has been handed a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix. The incident occurred on the opening lap of the race, when Hamilton attempted to overtake Verstappen around the outside of Copse Corner. The two cars collided, with Verstappen retiring from the race and Hamilton receiving a 10-second time penalty. The stewards also investigated an incident involving Sergio Perez, who was handed a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits. However, no further action was taken against Russell, who was involved in a separate incident with Pierre Gasly.
No further action to be taken against Russell
The FIA has issued a statement on its investigation into the incident involving George Russell at the British Grand Prix. The statement reads as follows: "The stewards have investigated the incident involving Car 63 (Russell) and Car 10 (Gasly) at Turn 9 on Lap 1 of the 2023 British Grand Prix. The stewards determined that Car 63 was predominantly alongside Car 10 at the apex of the corner and that there was no significant overlap between the two cars. The stewards also determined that Car 10 did not leave sufficient space for Car 63, which resulted in the contact between the two cars. The stewards have therefore decided to take no further action against Car 63."
The decision not to penalize Russell is likely to be controversial, as many fans believe that he was at fault for the incident. However, the stewards have determined that Russell was not predominantly to blame, and that Gasly also played a role in the collision.
