INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) — Downhill racer Aleksander Aamodt Kilde underwent a second operation on Thursday after he crashed during a training run in Austria.
The Norwegian skier posted a picture from his hospital bed on Instagram, showing him with his arm in a cast and his face covered in cuts and bruises.
"Not the way I wanted to start the new year," Aamodt Kilde wrote. "But I'm feeling lucky to be alive. Thanks to all the doctors and nurses who have taken such good care of me."
Aamodt Kilde crashed on Wednesday while training for the upcoming World Championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. He was airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck, where he underwent surgery on his knee.
The extent of Aamodt Kilde's injuries is not yet known, but the Norwegian Ski Federation said in a statement that he is expected to make a full recovery.
Aamodt Kilde is one of the most successful downhill racers in the world. He has won 12 World Cup races and two Olympic medals.
